The Meyera Oberndorf Library?

Now that the short lady is on her way out the City Hall door, it's appropriate to consider how Virginia Beach should remember her. Here's an idea I first tossed out three years ago: rename Central Library after her.

Prior to her 32 years on City Council (the last 20 as Mayor), Meyera Oberndorf served on the Library Board. In addition, she's served as the Council Liaison to it during her tenure on City Council. Given her longtime advocacy for the libraries, it would be fitting.

What a lovely idea! How do we go about doing this?

Obviously, City Council would have to pull the trigger.

How do we get the ball rolling? For starters, I refloated the idea....

As for "Central Library", the big problem is that it's not in a central location.

Nice but...I think she deserves the new convention center to be named after her.

William,

The convention center would be more appropriate for a corporate sponsor, to offset the operating cost.

Besides, a library suits Meyera better.

I'm sorry if my opinion doesn't match yours... She has been the greatest cheer leader this city has ever had and she deserves its biggest assest. But if you want to down grade her role, help yourselves...

Since Meyera's public career started on the Public Library board, I think it's appropriate.

But, honestly, I doubt Meyera is very interested in even discussing these subjects now. It's 2 weeks since Election Day, guys.

William,

The intent isn't to downgrade her role, but find an asset that fits very well.

My problem with the convention center (besides wanting to sell the naming rights) is that it's so big that it would set a precedent that would be difficult to match.

If Meyera gets a $230 million facility, what for future retiring public officials?

Libraries touch so many children's lives in so many inspirational ways. That's why its perfect for Meyera.

That's hardly a "down grade".

Even I agree with this one. Meyera Oberndorf Central Library sounds nice.

Question: How many current or future city officials will ever be the first female mayor, elected by the voters and serve as long as she has?

I'll bet you can't name one...

Btw: This isn't a new idea as it was floated about four years ago to get her not to run one more time in 2004. How quickly they forget...

William,

The convention center idea was floated in 2005 to try to get Meyera not to run in 2008.

Even then I argued Central Library would be more fitting.

This looks like a cheerleader website for the finally deposed
cheerleader. Ms. Oberndorf has
voted against the taxpayers for
over a decade. High assessments,
high food taxes,overpriced "public"
private partnerships, and she has promoted the city for the sake of
filling hotel rooms, and to replace
the businesses who left because of the high taxes, uncontrolled growth, traffic gridlock, and lack
of access to the Oceanfront for local residents.

If the private citizens want to give her a plague for her efforts,
let them do so. I think the citizens spoke loud and clear. They
are tired of seeing and hearing about Ms. Oberndorf. I think the
total number of votes against having her as mayor, 174,933, shows
what the taxpaying citizens of Virginia Beach want. Since the mayor is such a dog lover, let her
finance and upgrade the animal shelter, and that can be named after her.

I would whole-heartedly support naming a library after her. A great opportunity which can be harnessed is the Kempsville Library is slated to be redesigned. However, I believe it and the 4th Precinct together should be totally overhauled and rebuilt... and then be named after Meyera. Perhaps name it the Oberndorf library. It suits her as she was a librarian and has lived in Kempsville since the 60s - in the exact same home. They both are very grounded, no matter what you say or think about her and other council members' decisions (as decisions are owned by all, not by a single person).

Anon 3:51,

Note that this blog endorsed Scott Taylor for Mayor. I'm hardly Meyera's apologist.

Most of all, "If the private citizens want to give her a plague"? Bubonic sound good to you?

A plaque for the plague that has
afflicted our city seems to be
more then generous. Actually, I
think the plaque should be awarded
to Bill O'Reilly. He's the only one
who spoke out about the failures of
both Cheasapeake and Virginia Beach, to keep drunk drivers off of
our roads.

If this webhost endorsed someone
who didn't have a snowball's chance
in hell of winning, then that seems
to prove that this site was obviously helping to split votes to
keep her in office. Many votes for
Sessoms, were just votes to get Ms.
Oberndorf out of office.

"endorsed someone who didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning"?

No, I didn't endorse John Moss.
