Georgia Allen Files For City Council At-Large

In a move I was told about three weeks ago, Georgia Allen has filed to run for the Virginia Beach City Council in the At-Large race. Georgia has served as President of the Virginia Beach Chapter of the NAACP since 2000, temporarily stepping down to run for the House of Delegates three years ago.

While the At-Large field is Rosemary Wilson's to lose, I welcome my good friend Georgia to the fray. Five months of Georgia going around town attacking Rosemary's record should be the most fun we've had in Virginia Beach politics in a long time. I'm sure Allen will push issues that our incumbents have tried to ignore.

Also running At-Large are Lawrence Teator and Keith Strausbaugh.

4 people in this race gives it to Rosemary in a walk.

Weeks dropping out is such an obvious VBTA ploy it is funny.

Nazi, NAACP, KKK, LaRaza: They are all race-based groups (racist to some, race advocates to others) yet I do not understand why someone who supposedly intends to represent all of the citizens in elective office would brag about having had an affiliation with or having been an officer of a racist organization, like the NAACP.

Sure, talk about your work with the Kiwanis, Rotary or other service club, but crowing about a role in a race-based hate group like the NAACP, is reprehensible.

It is the 21st Century. We need leaders who will serve ALL of the People.

Ahhh, right wing talking points from JTB...

African Americans make up approximately 20% of Virginia Beach's population. Branch president Georgia F. Allen, a native of Virginia Beach, says the chapter has dealt with issues such as a lack of diverse representation in city government and a lack of diversity in positions of power since its inception. Allen says out of 40 city departments, only one African American is a department head.

"We called for the city manager's resignation a couple of years ago because we let him know that we can't have this type of discrimination," says Allen. "Because we did that, he did hire an African American assistant city manager for the first time in the history of the city of Virginia Beach."

What's wrong with that, JTB? That's certainly not hate based work. Exactly what "work" are you talking about?

I don't do "talking points" I just want good government. Given all of the possibilities for one to spend volunteer time, it makes sense for citizens to consider if a candidate has a record of service to the entire community, or if that person only serves a narrow range of interests.

I see no reason that a person should not be able to join any group; even race-based groups like the NAACP or Nazis; we are all free to associate with whomever we want.
However, when considering our candidates for election, those with a record of service to all citizens, rather than one race or gender, are better suited for elected office.

JTB,

It comes down to Federal civil rights laws. Virginia Beach has long had it's "residents vs. developers" battles. How do you tip the playing field towards the residents? You let the minority communities spearhead the fight, given their legal status. Letting them trip the legal thresholds will empower all residents regardless of race.

In short, given Federal law, the African-American community's wins are wins for us all.

I wonder how she will deal with her demand that Spore be fired during the business lunch meetings with the local business community and other candidates?

I was shocked she made the demand but in the long term I think she was correct. I might have to vote for her just to watch the sparks at the council meetings...

It was over the lack of minority hiring in upper level City management. Even if businessmen don't agree with the call, I would hope they could follow the reasoning of why it was done.

You are dreaming...

As a citizen and taxpayer, I want the best talent we can hire for our government jobs. We deserve the best, without regard to the employees' gene pool of origin.

I wouldn't care if upper management were all Aleutian Natives, if they were the best, based on MERIT.

I am fed up with giving someone a job or a college education simply because they are a certain color. We have long since passed the point of racism on only one side. It now comes in all colors and at all levels. It is despicable. All people deserve respect and all deserve the opportunity to fill leadership roles w/o consideration of color. To continue to inject color at all levels is exactly what perpetuates racism. Either an individual is capable or not, end of discussion. I to struggle with someone who has obviously been involved in promoting racism as the NAACP does.
