Mayor Sessoms Announces Deal On Norfolk Southern Right-Of-Way

This morning Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms announced an agreement has been signed for the City to purchase the Norfolk Southern Right-Of-Way. That 66 foot wide corridor would provide the path for light rail to be extended from Norfolk to the Oceanfront.

Needless to say, $40 million isn't being spent to have it as a bike path.

Really only $10 million, rest is state money.

The fact that the REPUBLICANS in the state government overwhelmingly support VB LRT should give some of the rabid VBTA-ers pause.

But they won't be happy until Libertarians are elected!

You leave out the important part,
and that is the state does not know when the money will be available. It's 20 million.

Anon 10:44,

You hit the nail on the head. A number of times I've jousted with Reid Greenmun online, and he tries to portray "mass transit = liberal". No, not at all. In fact, it's more cost-effective than bulldozing subdivisions to build new arterial roads.

Then, it's a blessing in disguise. As long as the VBTAers don't get it, their Council candidates will get wedged on mass transit (like John Moss was).

so based on your (Henry) comments on some of Kerry D. posts, is she like a reporter for the VBTA or is she part of them?

She's their "unofficial mouthpiece"

Shooter,

Kerry Dougherty has done a few columns that were clearly attempts to promote the VBTA.

the latest article talks about how long it took Norfolk to get everything together. now that the deal is pretty much sealed with NS, how long do you think it will take including all the studies and everything?

If you look at Norfolk's timeline, Virginia Beach LRT should take 7 years. Norfolk's Starter Line took 10, but FTA reg changes accounted for 3 of those years.
