Today's Virginian-Pravda reports that state Senator Ken Stolle is considering running for Sheriff. http://hamptonroads.com/2009/03/state-sen-stolle-ponders-run-virginia-beach-sheriff Some may be wondering "Why give up the Senate for jailkeeper?"
I've had it explained to me before that it's usually about the pension. Virginia would pension him based on total years service (Senate + Sheriff) with the amount based on the last three years salary (Sheriff's pay). When you consider the difference between a state Senator's salary and that of the Sheriff, Stolle would have much to gain in outlying years by becoming Sheriff. That's why regularly former legislators become Constitutional Officers (such as Norfolk's Tom Moss), Cabinet Secretaries, and state agency directors.
Does Stolle do it? If Ken really wants it, I don't expect current Sheriff Paul Lanteigne to stand in the way.

If Sen. Stolle runs for and is elected as sheriff, who might run for the 8th Senate District?
I knew the old short list; I'm not sure who would now.
Don't forget Stolle's time in the VBPD. That goes to his pension as well.
And the word I hear is DeSteph is lining up for Stolle's seat.
Given that the guns are already in place to blast DeSteph off City Council in 2010, Bill would be smart to head to Richmond.

Knocking off Reba was the opening skirmish. The primary objective wasn't eliminating her automatic "No" vote, but rather taking away the second on DeSteph's motions. Mission Accomplished, and now DeSteph is isolated on City Council.
The main battle is dumping DeSteph in 2010. Most of the same interests that financed Glenn Davis' campaign will be there. I didn't vote for DeSteph in 2006, and - given his notorius ties to the VBTA - have no plans to do so in 2010. (Hey, they'll probably send me stuff to run on this blog.)
