Went to take another look at what Transportation bills had been filed for this special session, and found HB 6028. http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?083+sum+HB6028 Delegate Bob Tata's bill declares light rail from Newtown Road to Virginia Beach's Oceanfront to be in the public interest and solicits bids for it as a PPTA.
Great news! I got excited and tried to cell phone Hampton Roads Transit's (HRT) Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications James Toscano to make sure he was aware of the bill. (Hit his voice mail; he must be busy in Richmond.) This is a fantastic way to jump start this project, which the Virginia Beach City Council has been leery of pulling the trigger on.
I await the reaction of the Virginia Beach Taxpayers Alliance (VBTA). They're adamantly anti-light rail, but does the private sector having point soften their stand? Stay tuned: this is going to be fun!

Keep me posted on everything
It's beyond me why anyone even worries about what the VBTA thinks. True, they can be counted on for entertaining sound bites. But Virginia Beach voters have repeatedly demonstrated how little they respect this group, its candidates, and its seeming inability to do anything more constructive than complain.
cfrederick,
Light rail is the only issue looming that could put the VBTA back in business. Therefore, insulate it so they can't play with it.
